Let's Talk Gardening

Well Ella isn't here yet. She's supposed to be here no later than the 22nd so I've already started saving my composting materials in a bucket in the garage. What do you fellow composters use as an "in between" from the kitchen to the composter? I know you can spend like $30-40 on actual counter top compost collection type thingy-ma-jobber but I doubt I can talk Della into getting me one of those as an early Christmas present.

You'll remember last year I planted my garden in pots and had great success with the 4 veggies that I planted so I decided to plant even more this year. Hot Jeff offered to build me raised beds (don't you just get all hot and bothered thinking of Hot Jeff hammering with his shirt off!) and I'm going to plant all sorts of fun stuff. The 4-H clan is pretty fussy when it comes to vegetables we will and will not eat so I've decided to donate my extra veggies (and the ones we don't particularly like) to my city's food share. I wish this were my idea, but alas it was my friend Al's and he wrote about it in our church's bulletin last weekend.

I've been talking to my Gardening Sensei, Bug, and she says carrots are cool weather vegetables so it looks like I will be planting those pretty soon. After that I'm pretty much clueless so I will need to spend some time withy my Bestie, Google, and find out what else is a cool weathered vegetable.

Well that's all I have to say about that. I'll be sure and get pictures of Hot Jeff building my raised beds. I'll lube him up with baby oil and spray him with a spray bottle so he's all glistening and sexy--we can make calendars and sell them on Etsy!

Sweet peas, sunflowers, dill, cucumbers, broccoli and pumpkins can all be started in April.

Another fun thing to plant is a salad section....mmmmmm....so good fresh from the garden.

TJ Maxx has nice counter-top composters for under $30. I bought one for all the woman in my family last year for birthdays. They aren't always there, so you have to keep an eye out and check back often. Great colors too.

Until you get something more permanent to use as an "in betwee" from the kitchen to the composter, a coffee can works great.

Mom has a least 32 ice cream buckets I could send you.

Just throw it in a bucket. I read Al's article in the bulletin too. What an awesome idea. We do a garden every year and always have waste because we can't eat it all. This year I am doing a bean teepee! I am all about the basics in my garden. Broccoli, zucchini, cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, and basil. --Heidi

you can cut the top off of a milk jug, coffee can, or a bucket works great too to use as an inbetween.

My in-laws have 2 buckets under their kitchen sink. One for garbage and one for compost. They dump it when it's full!

I have a large kitty litter bucket out on the porch (because I don't want any bugs flying/crawling around my garage) I use for composting stuff. While cooking I collect everything into any kitchen container I can find (usually a dirty one) then dump it out into the bucket on the porch. When the bucket is full (or whenever I feel like it) I dump it onto the compost pile! So, that is my crazy system!!!
I've learnt that those fancy kitchen counter composters are too small and I'd be running out to dump it every other day. This way (in the winter) I dump out the big bucket maybe once every two weeks :) Easier for me!!!! Esther D

Hey have you ever considered a CSA (community supported agriculture)?!?!?! I'm signing up for a share this year! It comes out to $25 for 20lb of all kinds of organic produce, per week!!!!! I'm splitting it with a friend!
